Broomstick Lace

Level: Beginner

Learn the basics of this trendy technique that's a mix of knitting and crochet. It's the perfect way to showcase gorgeous hand painted, yarns and you'll keep people guessing as to just how you did it. We'll start a, simple scarf pattern in class, and by the end, you'll be a pro at juggling both, hook and needle!

Prerequisites: Students should able to to make a chain and a double crochet, and be familiar with basic concepts in crochet.

Materials: Instructor will provide pattern for sample scarf. Students need to bring: Worsted weight yarn, size H-J crochet hooks (or a range of sizes), size 19 knitting , needle.

 

Silk Hand Spindling for Beginners

Everyone who learns to spin on a hand spindle can't wait to jump into the exotics, but are afraid they are going to mess it up or aren't ready.  In this class you will go straight to the top and start on silk. A beginner’s class to learn how to spin with a hand spindle and silk. This class touches on fiber characteristics, types of spindles,   and plying.  Instructor will provide spindles and fiber for students to learn with and take home and practice.

Prerequisites: None 

Materials: Hand spinning fiber and spindle.  If you already have a hand spindle please bring it to class.

 

Crochet Tips and Tricks

Level: Intermediate

Ever worked your first row of stitches only to end up a few chains short? Do you keep losing stitches along the edge of your piece? Perhaps you want to know how to get rid of the gap between your turning chain and the first double, crochet in a row, or the best way to create a stretchy foundation chain? Learn all of that and more in this fun class.

Prerequisites: Students should able to make basic crochet stitches (chain, single, double, half double).

Materials: Instructor will provide class handout. Students should bring: smooth, light colored worsted weight yarn and a range of crochet hook sizes, removable stitch markers, and one swatch that's 20 dc by 10 rows using a size H-hook.


Learn how to Punch a Sheep!

Level: Beginner

Join the latest craze punch needle! Quicker than cross stich--this exciting workshop utilizes the Cameo Ultra Punch needle, embroidery floss, cotton thread and your imagination to create a miniature picture suitable for framing! You will be punching an adorable sheep pattern! The kit comes complete with pattern, Cameo Punch needle, and floss. Lisanne will also show you the Oxford punch which utilizes yarn and start you from the very first punch to the finishing touches!

Prerequisites: Students should able to hold a pen, have a desire to learn punching, love sheep!

Materials: Instructor will provide cameo Ultra punch needle, pattern, yarn or floss, morgan locking Hoop. Students need to bring a Morgan Locking Hoop if they have one, if not one can be purchased or borrowed from the instructor.


Cotton Spinning with a Tahkli Spindle

Level: Beginner

Spinning cotton with a small supported spindle (tahkli) is a relaxing and portable activity. Once you get the feel of the drafting, you can make very fine yarn. We will be spinning cotton from a variety of preparations and will do some preparations ourselves.

Prerequisites: Students should have an interest in spinning cotton.

Materials: Brass tahkli, small bowl, and a wide variety of fibers and prepared fiber to spin (boll cotton, ginned fiber, sliver, roving, punis).

Back Strap Weaving 101

Level: Beginner

This class will go over some history of the back strap loom.  Will also go over making a loom/ Warping and weaving with the loom will be discussed.  Then everyone will get a chance to weave their own back strap to go with their new loom. Once everyone is comfortable with basic weaving we will go over a basic pick up technique with warp floats. Student will be taking home a loom.  The project on the loom will not be done by the end of the class but you will have everything you need to finish. 

Prerequisites: This is meant to be a beginner class so no previous weaving knowledge is needed. This style of weaving does work best sitting on the ground.  So bringing a pillow or small rug is good.  If you have extra knitting needles/pointy sticks and scissors please bring them. 

Materials: Please bring a long scarf or a piece of cloth that is long enough to go around your waist. 

 

Dying with Nature

Level: Beginner

Class Fee: $35.00

We will be dyeing with mimosa, gives a yellow/green color. Mike will talk about using the local or easily attainable dyes while the pots process. We will be using alum as a mordant, so is safe for the ground. Same stuff used in pickling. Participants will wind off 100 yard skeins of wool yarn and tie them before dying.

Students will need to bring a bath towel.

 

Get Hooking With Tunisian Crochet

Level: Beginner

Class Fee: $35.00

Time: 9:30-12:30pm

Tunisian is a hot trend in crochet and a fabulous technique to use with handspun yarn and even unspun roving! In three hours you will learn to do tunisian simple stitch, two ways to change colors, and how to work with three colors. The class project is a buttoned cup cozy or mug rug.

Prerequisites: Knowledge of slip knot, chain stitch and single crochet helpful. Knitters who have never crocheted are welcome.

Instructor will provide: Hooks to be used in class and available for sale if student desires, supplemental yarn including novelty yarn and handspun yarn for practice, a handout with diagrams for the stitches taught as well instructions for the cup cozy / mug rug.

Students should bring: Small amounts of worsted weight yarn in 3 different colors for learning, a palette of yarn for project in a variety of weights (no thicker than worsted for the project) including handspun or novelty yarn, as well as basic accessories.

 

Spinning Your Lunch:
Soy, Milk, Banana, & Corn fibers

Level: Intermediate

In the early 1900’s, science had shown the way to regenerate cellulose fibers  This encouraged the next quest to create fiber from a protein, and led to the creation of fibers from items we recognize as foods: soy, milk protein, corn and banana (not the fruit but the stalk). These fibers are sold now as Soysilk, INGEO, Silk Latte, and banana fibers.  These are very soft, fine fibers, which mimic silk and cashmere.  Learn the differences between these fibers as you spin and ply to make the most of their natural beauty.

 Prerequisites: Students should be advanced beginners or intermediate spinners. Students should be familiar with their spinning wheel or can use different size spindles. Students should be working toward spinning a finer yarn. Student should have used hand cards. Student should have plied 2 singles together a few times

 Materials: Instructor will provide four spinning fibers, booklets, and, worksheets. The following is a list of equipment and supplies the students need to bring to class:

  • Good working wheel, scotch brake or double drive recommended, or spindles in a variety of weights.

  • Single hole punch.

  • A small towel

  • About a dozen 3X5 file cards and sandwich baggies

  • Also bring oil, screw driver and any other basic tools for your wheel in case they are needed.

 

Knitting 911

Level: Beginner

The class is designed to teach knitters how to find and fix most mistakes. Knitters will learn when and how best to rip back and how to save as much of their knitting as possible. Tips and tricks to help make knitting more fun will be mixed throughout the class time.

Prerequisites: Students should able to knit and purl and have had some experience knitting. It is listed as beginner but often helps intermediate knitters as well. Students will need to bring size 9 or 10 needles, worsted.

 Materials: Instructor will provide a handout.

 

Hook a Sheep

Level: Beginner

Learn how to hook just like the women of the 1800's! Lisanne will guide you through the steps of how to hook an adorable sheep correctly named Ewe Not Fat Ewe Fluffy. You will learn how to pull loops, change wool colors to end up with a wonderful hooked sheep (either black or white) that can be made into a pillow or mat for your table. Come see what all the fun is about!

Prerequisites: Students should be able to hold a rug hook, have a desire to learn rug hooking, and like sheep!

Materials: Instructor will provide pattern, hook, and wool to complete the project!

 

Stranded Knitting

Level: Intermediate

Do you love the look of Fair Isle and Norwegian garments? This class teaches you all the tricks for successful stranded knitting. You will learn how to hold the yarns, keep your tension even when working with two colors at once, choose colors for stranded knitting projects, and more.

Prerequisites: Students should able to perform all basic knitting skills comfortably (knitting, purling, casting on and binding off, a few basic decreases). Students should have used double-pointed needles before.

Materials: Handout; small kaleidoscope. Students should bring 200 yards of a solid-color, Aran-weight yarn (e.g., Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran), plus 100 yards of a variegated Aran-weight yarn in a contrasting color (e.g., Noro Silk Garden or Kureyon); size 7 double-pointed needles (substitute needles for magic loop or two circulars if you prefer).

 

Intermediate Back Strap Weaving

Level: Intermediate

We will go into detail on warp float pattern weaving and supplemental weft pattern. If you have taken the beginner class, we will pick up from there.  You do not have to take the beginner class to take the intermediate.  We will also discuss different ways of warping and setting up the loom. Also will give mention of some possible future projects that can be done.

 Prerequisites: Understand the basics of weaving and the back strap loom. If you have taken the beginner class the material fee is not needed. We will be sitting on the ground, so a pillow or rug is nice to have.  Also scissors and knitting needles may come in handy.

 Materials: One back strap loom and the materials to complete one project.

 

My First Fleece!  Now What?

Level: Beginner

You've bought your first fleece, but now are unsure of how to proceed or are scared you are going to mess up it up.  This class will show you how to handle and what to look for in your fleece from the moment it comes to your door to sitting down and getting it ready to spin.  Sheep/Alpaca fleeces are covered.  Students should bring something to take notes with.

 Prerequisites:  Students should have a basic understanding of spinning.

Spinning Old & New Rayons -
Bamboo, Tencel, Viscose, Seacell

What do bamboo, tencel, viscose and seacell have in common?  These fibers are all known as rayon - regenerated cellulose; basically machinery digested and extruded fibers.  More than a century ago we began to manufacture textile fibers, in our quest to create fiber like the silk worm.  The methods have changed several times over the years and today we have many forms of rayon available for spinners.  Learn the techniques that will aid your spinning and help you chose the best fiber for your projects.

 Prerequisites: N/A

Materials: Instructor will provide booklets, worksheets and a variety of fibers for spinning The following is a list of equipment and supplies the students need to bring to class:

  • A good working wheel, (scotch brake or double drive recommended)

  • An extra bobbin and lazy-kate

  • Hand cards - 1 dozen 3X5 lined file cards and sandwich baggies

  • Scissors, stapler, hole punch or tape for attaching sample yarns and fibers

  • Also bring oil, screwdriver, and other tools for your wheel, in case they are needed

 

Learn How to Knit a Moebius Cowl

Level: Beginner

This is great class but you must know how to knit (not even purl) for this class!  The cowl is wonderful, you just put it one over your head and off you go!   It is a wonderful gift and a fun project to begin!  The prettiest shawls are made with mixed media yarn or yarn dyed wonderfully and at least 210 yards is required. 

 Prerequisites: Students should able to knit.

 Materials: Instructor will provide size 15 - 40 inch knitting needles. Students need to bring a Morgan Locking Hoop if they have one, if not one can be purchased or borrowed from the instructor.

 

Continental Knitting

Level: Beginner

Class Fee: $25.00

Time: 12-2pm

Most knitters in the US hold their yarn in their right hand and "throw" the yarn around the needle when they knit. In Continental knitting, the yarn is held in the left hand, and stitches are "picked." Many find it a faster way to knit. It is also a great skill to learn for color work and preventing repetitive stress injury. This class will re-teach you how to knit, purl and perform a few other basic stitches using the Continental method.

 Prerequisites: Students should able to perform all basic knitting skills comfortably (knitting, purling, casting on and binding off, a few basic decreases).

 Materials: Instructor will provide a handout. Students should bring a smooth, light-colored yarn and needles appropriate for that yarn.

 

Hand Carders vs. Combs

Level: Beginner

Learn which of these tools works best with your fiber prep.  In class you will be able to handle an assortment of tools, determine their strengths and weaknesses, techniques, and safety.  Included in discussions will be hackles and flickers. 

 Prerequisites: Students should have a basic understanding of hand spinning.

 Materials: Hand spinning fiber. Not a requirement, but students should bring tools they have on hand to use in class and share.
